Description

Charles Fort is a massive 17th-century star-shaped military fortress that has stood guard over Kinsale Harbour for more than three hundred years. Constructed between 1677 and 1682 during the reign of King Charles II, it was designed by architect William Robinson and remains one of Ireland's largest military installations. The fort is historically significant for its association with momentous events like the Williamite War of 1690 and the Irish Civil War.

The venue features awe-inspiring outer defenses reaching 16 meters in height and provides spectacular views from its ramparts overlooking the harbor. Visitors can participate in guided tours, explore interpretive exhibits and historical exhibitions, or even utilize the site as a unique wedding venue. Facilities include baby changing areas, a car park, and coach parking, with brochures available to help navigate the extensive grounds.

Admission is priced at €5.00 for adults, €4.00 for seniors or groups, and €3.00 for children and students. A family ticket is available for €13.00, and the site conveniently accepts card payments for all visitor fees.

Charles Fort offers a profound and immersive experience, allowing visitors to walk through a well-preserved monument of Irish history that survived 13-day sieges. Its combination of massive architectural scale and breathtaking coastal scenery makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Kinsale region. Located just 3km from the town center, it stands as a powerful and enduring testament to the military engineering of the late seventeenth century.

Features

  • As one of the country’s largest military installations, Charles Fort has been part of some of the most momentous events of Irish history. • Charles Fort is a massive star-shaped structure of the late seventeenth century, well preserved despite its history. William Robinson, architect of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, Dublin, is credited with designing it. Its dimensions are awe-inspiring – some of the outer defences are 16 metres high.
