Explore iconic architecture and beautiful interiors when you visit the House, including the Great Hall which rises 70 feet into the air. A visit in 2025 promises a grand reveal of a once-in-a-generation project transforming the House interiors, including restoring the lost Tapestry Drawing Room. 

The Gardens and Grounds at Castle Howard include lakes, follies, woodland, temples, and statues - all of which bring out the colour and drama of the four seasons. The Gardens are open daily (excluding the Walled Garden), and are dog-friendly.

The House is open from Spring to October, and is dressed for Christmas from November to January.

  • By car: From the North - From the A1 take the A61 to Thirsk then the A170 to Helmsley. Before Helmsley turn right onto the B1257 and follow the brown signs. Please be aware this route includes Sutton Bank which is unsuitable for caravans. If you are towing, please continue down the A19 and follow the signs for the alternative route. 
  • By Public Bus: A direct bus service, Route 81 runs from York to Castle Howard.
  • By Private Bus: House, Garden and Travel inclusive tickets are available on selected dates from 20th April - 30th October 2025, with collection from York City Centre. The comfortable Mountain Goat Tours minibus leaves York twice during the day, at 9am with a return time of 1pm, or at 12pm with a return time of 4pm.
  • By Train: Malton is the nearest train station to Castle Howard and York is the closest major train station. Both stations have buses running directly to Castle Howard and taxis are also available from both stations:
