Boyle Abbey is a well-preserved 12th-century Cistercian monastery located in Boyle, County Roscommon. Founded in 1161, it was the first successful Cistercian foundation in the province of Connacht. Despite centuries of conflict and damage, it remains one of Ireland’s most impressive early monastic sites.
The abbey follows the traditional Cistercian layout, with a church, cloister, chapter house, refectory, kitchen, dormitory, and storehouses, though only parts of the cloister survive today. A restored sixteenth/seventeenth-century gatehouse now serves as an interpretive centre, offering exhibitions and insights into the abbey’s history. Visitors can enjoy guided or self-guided tours, explore historic carvings and architecture.
Admission prices are €5.00 for Adults, €4.00 for Group/Senior, €3.00 for Students/Children, and €13.00 for a Family ticket.
Overall, Boyle Abbey offers a powerful glimpse into Ireland’s monastic past. Its dramatic stone architecture and layered history create a striking and atmospheric visit. This attraction is ideal for history lovers, families, and anyone interested in medieval Ireland and Cistercian heritage.
