Description

Bircham Windmill is a beautifully restored 19th-century windmill set in the rolling countryside of Great Bircham, Norfolk. Built in 1846, it once played a vital role in grinding corn for bread and animal feed, at a time when hundreds of windmills operated across the county. Today, it is considered one of the best preserved working windmills in Norfolk, offering an authentic and family-friendly heritage experience.

Visitors can climb all five floors of the windmill, see the original machinery, and enjoy panoramic views from the fan deck at the top. The site includes a Windmill Museum, interactive displays, audio stories from the last miller, quizzes for children, and a pictorial history of the restoration. Other highlights include friendly animals to meet, a hands-on “Turn the Cogs” activity, a film room, an original old-style till, and the historic bakery where bread and cakes are still baked using the original oven.

Admission prices are £7.25 for adults, £5.00 for children aged 4–15, and £5.85 for retired visitors. A family ticket costs £22.00, while season tickets are available from £12.50 for children, £14.60 for retired visitors, £18.00 for adults, and £55.00 for families.

Bircham Windmill offers a relaxed and educational day out where history comes to life through hands-on experiences. Children enjoy the interactive elements and animals, while adults appreciate the craftsmanship and peaceful rural setting. With its working windmill, historic bakery, and welcoming atmosphere, it is a rewarding visit for families, heritage lovers, and anyone exploring North Norfolk.

Features

  • Windmill: Standing in the heart of Norfolk's undulating fields, Bircham Windmill now looks as it did over 100 years ago. At that time over 300 mills ground corn for horse & cattle feed and bread-making in Norfolk.
  • Animals: There are plenty of opportunities to get close to animals at Bircham Windmill. Children can stroke the goat and feed them with special food from our dispenser.
  • Windmill Museum: Climb the five floors of this beautifully restored windmill, see all the machinery in place and experience the views from the top. There are information boards and audio boxes as you climb up and quizzes and things to find for the children. We have a model of Billy Howard - the last miller at Bircham Windmill, visitors can listen to his stories of time gone by.
  • Bakery & Bread: The bakery adjoining the mill still has its original, coal-fired oven for you to see. The bakery worked up until the 1950s, 30 years after the mill had stopped and many people used to walk to the mill to collect their bread. We still bake in the original bakery and sell a wide range of bread and cakes.
  • Turn the Cogs: Cogs are the teeth around a wheel called a gear. They rotate on an axle - the axles here are magnetic, so you can move all the gears around the wall. One gear turns another - where they meet the second gear has to move in the opposite direction.
  • Film Room: Grab a coffee, then relax in our film room and enjoy a choice of 8 different films while the children have a go at brass rubbing or ride on the rocking horse. Films include a virtual tour of the mill, the original restoration, Wagg's bakery at Docking and local history films. They range from 5 to 45 minutes in length.
  • The Old Till: Have a go with our original till. Can you work with pounds shillings and pence? Weigh your items on the scales, put in the total and the till drawer opens with a satisfying ring! Genuine old money inside for you to work out what is what. Can anyone in your family remember old money?

Facilities

  • Parking: Free car parking available.
  • Food & Drinks: The Tea Rooms serves a selection of home made cakes, scones and light lunches, a full range of English and Italian coffees and teas and of course our famous Clotted Cream Teas.
