Barnards Miniature Railway is a volunteer-run 7¼” gauge miniature railway located within the grounds of Barnards Farm Gardens in Essex. Opened in 2010, it offers a scenic and relaxed train ride through countryside surroundings. The railway is operated on behalf of The Christabella Charitable Trust, making it a community-focused attraction.
Visitors can enjoy steam-hauled train rides from Burtonshaw station to Sitooterie Halt, with diesel trains continuing to Angel Green Station. On limited days, a special ‘Barnards Belle’ Pullman-style service runs to Lake End station via a branch line. The railway features a fleet of steam, diesel, and battery electric locomotives, running along a 1.5km track, the longest end-to-end 7¼” gauge line in the UK.
A Return Ticket costs £7, while a Rover Ticket with unlimited rides all day costs £10. The railway operates on alternating Sundays between April and October, with additional selected Thursdays during half term and summer holidays, and is scheduled to re-open in April 2026.
Overall, Barnards Miniature Railway offers a charming and well-run miniature railway experience. It combines traditional train rides, volunteer passion, and a peaceful garden setting. This attraction is ideal for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a relaxed and enjoyable day out in Essex.
